Have you ever had a terrible haircut right before an important event? I know some of you have had your makeup done at the mall only to look like some clown from the 80′s. That would mean I wasn’t your artist. Oh yes folks, I used to manage makeup counters and do artistry for various companies in San Francisco.
I learned some of my most valuable lessons in sales and marketing back then. Today, I spend my time putting my own makeup on everyday for drop off at preschool and cleaning red lipstick off my daughters face.
In all truth, we are all the same and want similar things in life. As women, we want to be beautiful, successful and liked by others. Everything we do is branding us to attract a suitable offer. Why do you buy a new outfit to wear to interviews? The first impression is the hardest to change.
People think that doing business online or marketing through an affiliate program allows you to remain anonymous. Who you choose to represent online is a reflection of what you stand for as an individual. If something you read or participate in gives you a sense of purpose and direction then it would likely help someone else. Branding yourself has everything to do with the impression others have of you and whether or not they would recommend you to a friend.
I remember in college, my marketing professor stated that brand is everything. At the time, she used examples like “Coke” and “McDonald’s”. These are synonymous with a particular image. You can go anywhere in the world and find a McDonald’s and those damn french fries taste the same. I wish it weren’t true but it is. Nowadays, we associate coffee with Starbucks. I tell my husband all the time, “let’s get a Starbucks”. He knows that for me, that is either an iced coffee or a hot one. That is branding at it’s best.
Think about my old professors examples and relate those to your success of building an image on or offline. We all aspire to have that effect on the free market. I want people to associate me with honesty, laughter and a degree of authority.
Most importantly, be yourself and market to the people who appreciate you for being you. Bring value added content for their time and interest. Word to the wise, never get your face waxed before a big event!!
I hope this finds its way to your inbox and gives you something to chew on.
